The Call to Action for a Healthy Kern Summit celebrated health everywhere on September 17, 2014 at the Bakersfield Marriott with over 250 attendees. Community leaders working to help make Kern healthier were invited to speak about their innovative strategies in three focus areas (Living Tobacco-Free, Healthy Eating, Active Living, and Clinical and Preventative Services). In addition to the engaging conversations taking place among the panelists and audience, the first ever Call to Action Champion awards were presented. Over a dozen community leaders were nominated for their outstanding work in each of the focus areas. Elena Mondragon received the grassroots award for her work in nutrition and physical activity with residents. The Bakersfield City School District—Food Service Program received the organization award for their work in promoting healthy school environments and nutrition for the 45 schools and over 30,000 students they provide services for.
The CTA Coalition would like to thank Kaiser Permanente, Kern Family Healthcare, and The California Endowment for their support and their commitment to healthy communities. A special thank you to the CTA Summit 2014 Committee for all their time and effort in planning for this event: Ruth Bliss, Juli Coulthurst, Mariel Mehdipour, Dr. Avtar Nijjer-Sidhu, Nsele Nsuangani, Bill Phelps, Kristin Weber and the CTA team at the Kern County Public Health Services Department.
But just because the CTA summit has come and gone, doesn’t mean an end to the conversations and partnerships. The CTA team looks forward to working with current and new members in creating health everywhere. Join us in planning the future of Call to Action by taking this survey http://goo.gl/BNCn4s.
